How Your Custom Blackout Curtains Work

There are lots of things to consider when buying new curtains, and it can seem daunting, but in a few simple steps, you can have your printed blackout curtains designed and ordered in no time.

Step 1: Measure
Here you need to not just measure your window, but the entire area that you want your bespoke blackout curtains to cover. If your curtain pole or rail is above the window frame then you will need more curtain to reach the bottom of the window. You will need to add to your window measurements for your curtains, as otherwise, you'll end up with a flat sheet over the window, rather than pleats or ruffles. The average curtain size for tape headings is 2x the area you wish to cover, whereas for eyelets this is typically 1.8x the area. If you are ordering replacement curtains, and your previous ones were a great fit, you may find it easier to measure the existing curtains than the window area. We advise you to consider adding an extra centimetre of fabric around all edges for hemming, and shrinkage. Curtain fabric shrinkage can be anything between 2% and 6%, so it's best to consider this during the design stages.

Step 2: Style
There are multiple options within our design tool to make sure you get exactly the curtains you want, so once you have your measurements it's time to pick your style. Here you get to decide if you want a single panel - one curtain to cover the whole area - or if you'd like a pair. Each curtain can be made up to a maximum size of 40 m x 40 m, so if you want a single curtain it's very likely we can make it for you. You can also choose your hanging style, we offer wire hanging, tape heading which uses hooks or eyelets which are available in two sizes and two colours.

3 way hanging

We also offer four different lining options. The curtains are made from Suede Vision textile, to which you can add no lining, one layer of our high-quality ivory lining, one layer of our blackout lining which is dense weave and cream, or interlined. Interlined has three layers, the Suede Vision printed curtain, a quality wadding to line the middle and then the ivory lining at the back. Please note if you choose a lining that isn't the blackout lining, your curtains will no longer have the same blackout properties.

Now just add in the measurements that you worked out earlier (the design tool can take these in centimetres, metres, inches or yards, so no matter how you took those measurements you shouldn't need to convert them) and you're ready to create your design.

Step 3: Design
Now for the fun bit, you've measured and styled your curtains, all that's left to do now is design your printed blackout curtains. Upload your photos, create graphic designs, add text or create a photo collage, to make your curtains match your lifestyle and your personality. All of our custom blackout curtains are handmade to order, so you can personalise these curtains as much as you like, and they will be truly unique. If we find any issues with the quality or resolution of your images we will get in touch to discuss but at this stage its worth checking you are happy with the placement of your images and the spelling within any text that you may have added. Once you're completely happy with your design, submit your order and receive your custom made blackout curtains.

What my Custom Blackout Curtains Will Look Like

The Suede Vision fabric is a soft, faux suede material, which has a matte finish. It is smooth in every direction and has little to no creasing. There is no elasticity in this textile, so you won't find your printed design becoming distorted and it's non-fraying.

Your print will be vivid with crisp, bold colours. Our Suede Vision fabric also has a water repellent quality, making it an ideal material to make your custom blackout curtains from. Our Suede Vision fabric is extremely strong, having undergone the Martindale test with fantastic results. The Martindale test uses an abrasive material such as wire wool, to rub against the material in a circular motion until there is damage or a noticeable change in material. The brilliant result of this testing means that your printed blackout curtains can withstand daily use, multiple openings and closings for years and years to come.

Please note: when you select our fire-rated lining or our blackout lining your curtains will be naturally heavier in weight.

Edge to edge blind printing

Your custom blackout curtains will be made with your design printed on the front, and dependant on the style you chose you will have either an ivory backing or a white blackout backing. Your photo is printed onto the front of the made to measure blackout curtains using modern digital printing methods. This penetrates the eco-friendly inks deep into the fibres of the fabric, resulting in a long-lasting, highly detailed print. Once our printing technicians have finished printing your material they pass this onto our craftspeople.

The craftspeople will cut your custom made blackout curtains to size, based on the measurements that you gave us in the design interface when you placed your order. The reason that we print before cutting is to ensure that your photos run from edge to edge with no white seams or lines around your photos.

Our talented sewers then hem and stitch your printed blackout curtains, ensuring everything is finished beautifully. Depending on the hanging style that you chose, either our sewers or craftspeople will ensure that everything is in place for you.

Our quality control department will then give everything a once over and ensure it is to the high quality that is expected, before shipping your custom blackout curtains out to you.

Create your own home cinema

You can choose your own background colour for your custom blackout curtains, rather than using the standard white, and our design tool comes with some pre-set collage templates. Rather than fill your curtains edge to edge with photos, create a beautiful picture collage on a coloured background that matches the decor of your room. This is a great idea if you'd like bespoke curtains in multiple rooms.

Blackout curtains stop light shining through, which is perfect for creating a cinema experience right in your own home. From side-splitting comedies to adrenaline-fuelled action movies, packed with intense fight scenes, explosions, high-speed chases and battles. From edge-of-your-seat thrillers to heartwarming - or heartbreaking - dramas, unimaginable sci-fi to awe-inspiring fantasy and absolutely everything in between, you can enjoy your favourite flick in total darkness. Grab some popcorn, draw the curtains and settle down to your favourite movie in style, all from the comfort of your own sofa.

Eyelet curtains

When ordering eyelet curtains please bear in mind the space required at the top of the curtain which will be taken up with the eyelets. This is approximately 12 cm at the top of your design. For patterned designs you may wish to fill this completely, however, if you are adding text or photos to your custom blackout curtains please ensure that you don't place any important details of your design within this area. eyelet design tips
