How your Custom Blackout Blinds Work

We supply your custom blackout blinds with all the parts and the instructions, as well as a safety cord clip. When ordering your blinds there are a few things you might want to take into account.

Step 1: Choose the fitting
You can choose to have your custom made blackout curtains in one of two styles; relief and recess. Relief blinds attach to your window frame or wall and come down over the window in its entirety. Recess blinds are fitted within your window frame and the bottom of them sits on your windowsill when they are pulled all the way down. Both have different benefits, and it's entirely up to you which one you would prefer.

Relief mount photo blinds

rollerblindThis is where the blind screws to the window frame or wall and stands proud of the wall or frame. You must add at least 5cm in width to house the spindle fittings as well as the personalised blind.

The blind goes inside the 'box' of the window. We need to know the precise dimensions. We subtract 3.2cm from the fabric width to allow for brackets. The finished blind including brackets will equal your selected width.

Step 2: Measure
To make sure that you order your custom blackout blinds in the right size, you need to check your dimensions. Measure the size of your window top to bottom and left to right. Our simple to use online design tool can accept these measurements in inches, centimetres, yards or metres, whichever way you are most comfortable working is fine.

Now here is the important bit - if you have chosen relief mounted blinds you need to add at least 5 cm onto your width measurement. This is to allow for housing the spindle fittings as well as your personalised blackout blind. If you have chosen recess mounted blinds, we need the exact measurement. We will subtract from the width to allow for the brackets so that the blind and brackets equal your selected width.

Step 3: Choose your options
This part is where you choose the make-up of the blind, which is done using our online design tool. Here you select whether you would prefer a 'recess blind' or a 'relief blind'. You can choose whether the cord is made from white plastic, or you can upgrade it to a silver metal one. As well as this you get to decide whether the cord sits on the left or right of the window. And just in case you change your mind at this point, you can also change the material so that you have a standard blind which allows some light through.

Step 4: Create your design
Now for the bit that you've been waiting for. Upload your photographs, make a unique design or even add text to your made to measure blackout blind. Select different background colours, make a montage of all of your favourite snaps, we even have some templates that you can use to create a photo collage. You set this up exactly as you like, and you can double check it using the design view button. This will let you preview your design on a roller blind, where you can zoom in and check all of the finer details.

Step 5: Triple Check
Yes, we know you already double checked as part of step four, but it is definitely worth triple checking your design. We will notify you if there are issues with the resolution of your chosen pictures, but it's worth giving the spelling and positioning another once over. We hand make your blinds here in London with super fast turnaround times, so we like to make a start as quickly as possible. This means that we want you to be 100% happy with your design from the moment that you press submit. So check everything over one last time, and send us your order.

That's it - you're done.

Your blind is also supplied with a safety cord clip. This is fitted by lining the last section of your cord and pressing it into the holes until you hear a click and then repeating for the other end of the cord with the other side of the safety clip. Now you can simply push the two parts of the clip together, as though you're making a square until you hear a clear snap noise. This will now complete the loop of your custom roller blinds' cord. If anyone now pulls too hard on the cord the clip will simply come apart, making it much safer especially for children. When opening or closing the blinds, if you guide the cord along with your hands whilst pulling on it gently, it will avoid the safety device coming apart.

Child Safety Regulations mean that all blinds have to comply with EN13120. Contrado Imaging Ltd takes the following measures to comply:

  • A safety breaker piece will be supplied, with any blind with cords and/or chains.
  • We advise the recommended distance from the floor to the bottom of the chain will be at least 80cm.
  • We supply the cord length at 2/3rds the length of your chosen drop.
  • A warning notice comes attached to your roller blind.
  • Installation instructions will be provided and must be available once the blind has been fitted.
  • There will be a warning notice on the product packaging.
  • Our company name and date of manufacture are included on the roller blind fabric.

These safety measures will be applied to every blind supplied by Contrado Imaging Ltd.

What My Custom Blackout Blinds Will Look Like

Your made-to-measure blackout blinds will arrive rolled up, on the pole with fittings at each end. You'll have your custom design printed on one side of the fire retardant, non-fraying fabric while the reverse side will be plain white. The material we use for the blackout blinds gives more depth to the colour than our standard blind material, as you can see in the image which shows a side by side comparison of the two.

To comply with Child Safety Regulations, a warning notice will come attached to your roller blind, and our company name and date on manufacture will be included on the roller blind fabric.

Roller blinds are supplied with an extra two to three wraps of fabric, which is created by mirroring your design. This does not show in the design interface and is there so that the metal pole is not exposed when your bling is closed. Ensure that this stays rolled up when you close your blind as it adds strength.

Please note: We will have added an extra few wraps of fabric at the top edge of your blind. This means that when your blind is fully extended you aren't left looking at the pole. In the majority of cases, your design will be mirrored to ensures all the colours match up. Please ensure you do not open the blind past the lower limit, this is likely to result in your blind coming off of its pole.

Make a Collage

If you can’t decide on which photo to use, you can upload multiple images and create a photo collage. This can be done using one of our pre-set montage templates, or you can create your own entirely from scratch. It’s super easy to do and the possibilities are endless.

photo collage

How to add your collage to your product

Step 1 – Click the start design button & select your product options.

Step 2 – Go to the ‘Images & Text Tools’ tab, click the ‘add images/Text’ button on your product & ‘Select Images to Upload’ or use the Facebook/Instagram tabs.

Step 3 – Choose the images you want to use for your collage, upload & select them from the uploaded photos list.

Step 4 – Click ‘Create montage’ & select your collage style.

Step 5 – Add the collage to your design.

Hints and Tips

  • The more images you add to your collage the smaller each image will be. Fewer images will be larger and give you more clarity and detail.
  • The more people in an image, the less detail there will be. If you have 10 images of a group of five friends, each person will be smaller than if you have 10 images of just one person.
  • Try to make sure that the longest side of each image is around 10 centimetres. There is a handy ruler built into the design tool to help you with this.
  • Smaller products will not be able to fit as many images as larger ones will.

Made to order and to measure

Your custom blackout blinds are not only made to order, as with the rest of our bespoke products, but they are completely made to measure too. Using specialist eco-friendly inks we fuse your photo design deep into the fibres of the fabric. This creates a long-lasting print which is rich in colour, with beautiful detailing.

We will have added an extra two to three wraps of fabric right at the top of your blind. This is so that when your blind is fully extended you aren't left looking at the pole. To do this we will - in most cases - mirror your design, this ensures that all of the colours match up. Make sure you don't pull the blind past the lower limit, as this may result in your fabric coming off of the pole.

Great for kids

There are so many amazing things that you can do with custom blackout blinds. Not only can you print with your favourite photos of you and your family or pets, but you could print a stunning holiday landscape photo. Relive that beautiful sunset beach walk, or capture the serenity of the waterfall or lake you visited the year before last. You could even create your own design using your favourite characters, maps from your favourite place (real or make-believe) or a collage of your child's nursery pictures.

This custom printed black out curtains are so personalised that it's ideal wherever you want to put it, but we think that the great blackout properties make it perfect for your little one's room. No longer will you hear "but it's still light" when your blinds block all of that out, and the waterproof qualities mean that they can be wiped clean too. You could even create your own alphabet imagery, in an 'A is for Apple' style, to make it educational as well. We also love the idea of creating your family tree and having that printed on the blinds, so your little angel is able to have their nearest and dearest watching over them.
